The five black glass beads, known as Kings Beads, were made in Venice during the 1860s and later brought to West Africa. They were given the name "Kings Beads" because traditionally chiefs would be the ones to wear them.
The clear green glass beads were made in Checkoslovakia in 1920. Families at that time had secret recipes to attain such unique colors. They are imperfect in size and shape because the hand (rather a machine) was used to shape each bead.
The rest of the necklace is full of Ghanaian recycled glass beads, vintage Murano glass beads, and Czech beads (circa 1950-1970) from a private collection in Venice.
